IMPACT OF PROBLEM BASED LEARNING METHOD ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF BIOLOGY STUDENTS IN OSUN STATE SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT
The study examined the impact of Problem Based Learning Method on academic performance of urban and rural Biology students in Osun State senior secondary schools. One hundred and eighty (180) Biology students selected randomly from public secondary schools in Osun State participated in the study. The study used pretest, posttest control group non-randomized quaziexperimental research design. Two instructional packages were developed one for the treatment group and the other was subjected to traditional method of teaching. Biology Achievement test was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while the analysis of co-variance and t-test were used to test the hypotheses summary of the results revealed that instructional Problem Based Learning method was more effective than traditional method in enhancing the academic performance of urban and rural students in Biology. Based on these, the researcher concluded that Problem Based Learning technique is a good teaching method for teaching Biology. In view of this it is hereby recommended that Problem Based Learning for teaching and learning of Biology should be given due consideration irrespective of the location of the students in the school.
