COPING STRATEGIES OF VICTIMS OF POLITICAL VIOLENCE: A SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY OF VICTIMS OF THE 1983 GENERAL ELECTIONS IN IBADAN, OYO STATE, NIGERIA
This study investigates the coping strategies employed by victims of the 1983 general elections in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, to deal with the impact of political violence. The study used a qualitative research design and an in-depth interview guide to elicit responses from thirty-three respondents. The theories of Frustration/Aggression, Anomie, and Social Capital served as the conceptual framework. The findings revealed that people turn to the web of social capital they have cultivated over time to cope with the effects of political violence. Moreover, respondents also used changing occupations, relocating from places of victimisation, and reducing spending as coping strategies. Further studies on the coping strategies of victims of political violence during the 1983 general elections and the effects of which are known to be profound, and the need for authorities to explore a genuine platform for reparation, discussion and compensation of victims to hasten the process of national healing were recommended.
